Sri Lanka Design Practices (SDP) was an experiential field-trip based learning project developed for first year students of the Academy of Design’s Visual Communication programme; developed with the goal of taking students out of the classroom and exposing them to traditional forms of craft and design, challenging them to absorb and acknowledge their own position in the hierarchy of visual culture, design and artefact production, and cultural heritage.

Crafts and locations explored Palmyra weaving in northern Jaffna, laquerware in Kandy district, mask-making in the South region, batik making in Western area, Geoffrey Bawa architecture in Colombo.

Outcome 2017 A seven-part book, postcards and series of collage pieces inspired by each crafting village and artisan location visited around
Sri Lanka over the course of two months. The compiled photographs, notes and videos were interpreted by the students and transformed into a book
and a short documentary.
